An airfare search engine searches other search engines and/or databases and returns the desired flight information (based on the initial itinerary requested) from each one.

These travel sites/services identify the engines, databases, and sites that their airfare search engine searches with each and every request. These types of engines create what is called a virtual database. They take a user's request, pass it to several other assorted databases and then compile the results in on virtual database. The end result is a comprehensive list of airfare prices that frequently offer some of the deepest discounts in airfare available on the market.
